Hospital Coverage Under Medicare Part A

What Part A pays, the inpatient deductible, and how benefit periods work.

Part A pays for inpatient hospital stays, skilled nursing facility care after a qualifying hospital stay, hospice, and some home health.

You pay a deductible per benefit period โ€” not per year. A new benefit period starts after 60 days without inpatient care, which can mean a second deductible in the same calendar year.

Medicare Supplement Plan G covers the Part A deductible in full. Medicare Advantage plans cap your total inpatient cost-sharing.
